John was one of the founder members of the Towy Group, and was actively involved until his untimely death.
John Strange spent his childhood on the family farm at St Martins, near Gobowen in Shropshire, but, having rejected a career in farming, he took up a career as a schoolmaster. He obtained his teaching certificate at the Culham Church of England Teacher Training College and subsequently worked as a history teacher at Stroud in Gloustershire. In 1971, he took an honours degree at the University of Lancaster, after which he taught history at the Ripley St Thomas Church of England School in that city.
